about

This is an album of my own compositions similar to Wendy Carlos' Switched-On Bach — Switched-on Bach the way I like it -- more modern and mature -- all on the Moog Synthesizer like the original I loved at age 16.

It really is a collection of preludes but they all fit the names well. Number 1 has the energy of the opening to Switched-On Bach (Overture to Sinfonia 29 - Maybe I should name it Overture). Number 2 has an essence of John Carpenter's work and is my favorite. Lots of dark, muffled and filter changing brass. Number 3 is based on some Phillip Glass I like very much. It matures and has much more feeling and rubato than Glass. It has a Vangelis type feel to it.

The next 6 pieces are in a baroque suite. Number 4 is a Bach-like piece that starts baroque and morphs into a dissonant piece ending finally with the theme B.A.C.H. I used some real 8 bit sounds because it's more electronic sounding. It opens up the suite. Number 5 is a Gavotte. It's a type of dance that's part of a typical baroque suite. Mine sometimes has an accent on beat 3. Number 6 is a Sarabande. It's the quiet, slower romantic part of a suite. It uses some bells and ends with a favorite bunch of patches. Number 7 A Capriccio - short and free in form, perhaps decadent or silly. It's vivace and powerful as well. Number 8 is a Double. It's a slower piece with a variant and full transformation at the end. I used the Moog’s voice like patches to make the main instrument. It is similar to the instrument in “A Clockwork Orange”. Number 9 A Gigue or "jig" that is in 6, fast and upbeat. Mine is really in 12 or a long 3/4 phrase. (IT wasn't played on a Moog but a simulation of a vintage synth... you can hear the difference.) This is the end of the baroque suite.

Number 10 is my Prelude and Fugue with a short prelude based on a sort of Bach Sarabande with it's 3 part fugue that passes through several moods. It ends with recaps from the prelude. It's got a firework I made with the Moog at the end.
